General Steps of Removing Stains and Marks on Hardwood Floors

Person cleaning a light timber floor with a mop

A mark on a timber floor can sit on the coating, in the coating or in the timber underneath. Knowing which one you are dealing with helps avoid a cleaning attempt that makes the damage worse.

Identify the mark before treating it

Check whether the mark appeared after a spill, a dragged object, pet activity or ongoing moisture. A superficial scuff often looks different from a dark stain that has penetrated a board. Take a photograph and check whether the finish is cracked, soft or missing around it. If the floor still feels damp or the stain is spreading, address the source of moisture first.

For wider moisture damage, read our guide to water-damaged timber floors.

Try finish-compatible cleaning

Remove loose grit with a soft broom or timber-safe vacuum attachment. Then use only a cleaner recommended for the floor’s known finish, following its directions and testing an inconspicuous area first. Keep water to a minimum and dry the area promptly. Our floor care guide covers regular maintenance.

Avoid repeated scrubbing, abrasive pads, household bleach, steam and untested solvents. They can damage a coating or leave a larger discoloured patch. If one gentle clean does not work, stop and assess the finish rather than applying stronger products.

Decide whether repair or sanding is needed

A mark confined to the coating may be suitable for a local repair or recoat. A deeper stain may need a board-level repair or sanding, depending on the floor’s construction, coating and remaining timber thickness. Dark staining caused by moisture may remain visible even after sanding. A replacement board can also differ in colour from aged surrounding timber.

The best option depends on an inspection, not the colour of the stain alone. Compare timber floor repairs with floor sanding and polishing before choosing a treatment.

When to seek an assessment

Ask for advice if you see swollen boards, recurring stains, damaged coating or an unknown floor type. Quality Floors can assess timber floors in Brisbane and explain which marks may clean off, which require repair and whether sanding is appropriate. Contact the team with photos of the affected area.
