Assess the structure before treating the surface
Before a coating is chosen, check for loose fixings, soft or split boards, movement and moisture problems. A new finish cannot correct an unsafe or unsound deck. The timber species, board shape, previous coating and access around posts or balustrades all influence how the surface should be prepared.
If a board is failing, repair or replacement may be needed before refinishing. Surface colour by itself is not proof that the deck needs replacing.
Where a wire brush may help
The Blitz is a specialist preparation tool that can work into the texture and detail of some weathered boards. It can help remove loose, degraded surface material where a flat sanding pass alone would leave uneven-looking detail. Other areas may still need sanding or hand work, and not every deck is a suitable candidate. A test area helps establish the finish that can realistically be achieved.

Choosing an outdoor finish
Decking products differ in appearance, maintenance requirements and application conditions. Use a product specified for the timber, exposure and intended use; follow its preparation, recoat, drying and maintenance instructions. An indoor floor coating should not be assumed suitable outdoors.
Ask the contractor to specify the proposed finish in the written scope and explain what ongoing maintenance it will need. For the broader decision between oil, stain and sealer, follow the product specification rather than treating those terms as interchangeable.
What the restoration sequence may involve
- Inspect boards, fixings, existing coating and surrounding details.
- Agree on any board or fixing repairs before surface work.
- Clean and prepare a test area using the method suited to the deck.
- Prepare the remaining accessible surface and edges.
- Apply the selected outdoor finish under the manufacturer’s conditions.
- Follow the confirmed re-entry and maintenance guidance.
The number of visits and the time before furniture or foot traffic return depend on the product and weather. A fixed two- or three-day promise is not appropriate without seeing the deck.
