Why Brisbane decks are uniquely challenging
A Brisbane deck faces four destruction forces a residential floor never sees:
- Direct UV — 200-300 days of Queensland sun per year. UV breaks down lignin in timber, leaves it grey and weathered.
- Wet/dry cycles — storm rain then 35°C heat, repeated weekly through summer. Boards expand, contract, split, cup.
- Hardwood toughness — Brisbane decks are typically built from spotted gum, ironbark, blackbutt, jarrah, or merbau. Very hard timbers that resist sanding with consumer disc sanders.
- Tongue-and-groove deck boards — many Brisbane decks use T&G systems that complicate sanding around fixings.
The result: most decks 7+ years old need restoration if they’re going to stay structurally sound and look right.
The standard deck sanding problem
Most floor sanders attempt decks with the same disc and edge sanders they use indoors. Two problems:
- Disc sanders don’t dig into weathered hardwood — the grey weathered layer is harder than fresh timber underneath; standard sanding takes forever and burns through belts
- Edge sanders can’t reach board joins — T&G grooves stay weathered while board faces sand clean
The result is often patchy: clean board centres with grey grooves and dark corners. Looks worse than before.

- Inspection and structural check — any rotten or split boards identified for replacement before sanding starts. Look for fastener corrosion (Brisbane salt air can be brutal on cheap nails).

- Disc sanding for board face refinement — smooths out any Blitz texture lines, brings the timber to a refinishable finish.
- Edge work with hand tools — around posts, balustrades, and any architectural features.
- Cleanup and gap-fill — small splits filled with colour-matched filler; large splits trigger board replacement.
- Decking oil application — typically Cabot’s Aquadeck, Sikkens Cetol HLS, or similar UV-stabilised decking oil. Two coats minimum.

Decking oil vs timber floor finish
One of the most common questions: can we use indoor polyurethane on decks?
No — and any deck restorer who says yes is wrong. Polyurethane is film-forming; outdoor UV destroys the film, water gets between film and timber, the floor lifts and peels within months. We use only:
- Penetrating decking oils (Cabot’s, Sikkens, Olympic) — oil penetrates the timber and protects from inside
- UV-stabilised formulations — block UV degradation
- Water-based decking finishes — for some specific applications, particularly where slip-resistance is critical
