The Shift to Matte: Queenslander Timber Floors in Brisbane

Freshly finished timber floor in an unfurnished living room

A matte finish can put the grain and colour of a Queenslander’s timber boards in the foreground. Satin and gloss reflect more light. None is automatically more valuable or better for every room: choose the appearance and care routine that suit your floor.

Compare the look in your own light

A finish sample can look different next to a window, under ceiling lights and in a shaded hallway. Before deciding, view the proposed sheen on your actual timber, ideally in more than one part of the house. Existing repairs, species variation and past coatings can also change the result.

SheenTypical appearanceWhat to check
MatteLow-reflection, natural-looking surfaceWhether the chosen product shows marks or uneven cleaning on your timber
SatinGentle reflection between matte and glossWhether the sheen suits both bright and shaded rooms
GlossMore visible reflection and highlightsHow reflections and everyday marks appear in the home’s lighting

These are visual descriptions, not standardised percentages. Product labels and sample boards are more useful than assuming every brand’s “matte” will look the same.

Consider wear and maintenance

Sheen alone does not tell you how long a floor will last. The coating system, preparation, household traffic and care all matter. Dust and scratches can look different under different lighting, but a matte label does not make a coating scratch-proof. Ask for the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions and whether a local touch-up or recoat is compatible with the product.

If the existing coating is sound, a floor-polishing or recoat assessment may be worth discussing before a full sand. If the coating has worn through or the timber is damaged, floor sanding or board repairs may be needed first.

Keep heritage character in the decision

Older Queenslander boards may have visible nails, patching and species variation. Some owners prefer a low-sheen finish that leaves this character easy to see; others want the reflectivity of satin or gloss. There is no reliable basis for promising a sale-price premium from one sheen. For pre-sale work, focus on the floor’s condition and a finish that suits the home. Our pre-sale floor sanding guide explains the planning considerations.
